Six million children under the age of 5 die every year as a result of hunger.
Obesity is the second leading cause of preventable death in the U.S.
More than 840 million people in the world are malnourished — 799 million of them live in the developing world.
Approximately 127 million adults in the U.S. are overweight, 60 million are obese.
Simple statistics. Often we breeze over statistics as mystifying as these and then go about our lives as if our eyes never took them in. I think it's because we're scared to learn that the statistics we read truly describe our world. We want to believe that everyone can drive to a Wal-Mart and pick up what they want, cook it on their stove. We want to believe everyone can pick up a McFlurry on their way back from soccer practice. We want to believe that when we think the world's going to hell when 2000 comes we can stock up on water and soup. We stray away from the ugly distorted parts because then we can sleep alright at night thinking what we have is deserved. Regardless of whether that is true or not, everyone deserves to eat. Everyone deserves the necessities of life so that they can impact the world the way we all dream to as a child.
Simple idea. America is obese. We fill ourselves with food that destroys our bodies because its cheaper or it tastes good. We spent 20 billion dollars on ice cream in 2007, enough to feed the entire world and give it water. Everyone has some food, something that they buy that is bad for them and they don't need. For me it is UDF Frozen Yogurt. I probably spend 15-20 dollars a month on it. But I don't need it, most times I wish I didn't eat it. Maybe it's fast food for you, or chocolate. Whatever it is, this is the proposal. Take the money that you would spend on that food you'd be better off without, and give it to a cause that fights hunger. Give away your excess to give someone a chance. Balance the scales.
